Workplace Trends to Know for 2023

In 2022, employers had to get used to a “new normal” after the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and were impacted by the Great Resignation, “quiet quitting” and the possibility of a recession. These, in addition to the following trends, will no doubt continue to shape commercial risk factors in 2023:

Increased employee monitoring

With more employees working remotely, employers are finding new ways to track productivity. Namely, some employers are implementing electronic monitoring systems on company-issued devices. Monitoring software can record keystrokes, record phone calls and take screenshots of what is on an employee’s device. This technology helps employers understand how employees are using their time.

Improved virtual collaboration

Increased collaboration is another trend that has come out of remote and hybrid work. As working locations become more dispersed, organizations will rely on tools that allow users to stay in close contact no matter where they are. Virtual environments and platforms could start playing more prominent roles in meetings, training sessions and sales pitches.

Continued flexibility

Workplace flexibility continues to be popular for attracting and retaining employees. This includes remote or hybrid work, flexible scheduling and four-day workweek programs. Flexibility has become so important that 80 per cent of remote-working Canadians said they would quit if forced back into the office full-time, according to a survey reported by CTV News.

Boomerang employees

Employers have been hiring, seeking out or re-recruiting “boomerang” employees— workers who used to work at an organization, left voluntarily and now wish to return. Boomerang employees can be beneficial to a company because they are often easier to vet, swifter to onboard and often come with expanded skill sets since quitting.

A focus on employee well-being—In order to create a stronger workforce, employers are focusing more on a holistic approach to employee well-being. This includes offering extended benefits, paying more attention to workloads and providing mental health services.
