Proof of Vaccination No Longer Required for Domestic or Outbound Travel

The Government of Canada announced that as of June 20, 2022, proof of vaccination is no longer required for “domestic and outbound travel, federally regulated transportation sectors and federal government employees.” The vaccination requirement has technically been “suspended” and may come back in force if COVID-19 infection rates spike.

However, vaccination requirements at the border will stay in effect for incoming foreigners and apply to all cruise ship travellers. In addition, Canadians returning from international destinations who do not qualify for the fully vaccinated traveller exemption will still need to follow quarantine guidelines. Other public health measures, such as wearing a mask, will continue to be enforced on planes, trains and ships.

Vaccination Rates in Canada

The decision to suspend vaccination requirements for domestic and outbound travel was informed by a number of key factors, including:

  • Approximately 85 per cent of the population has been vaccinated with at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
  • 98.5 per cent of the federal public service has been fully vaccinated.
  • Rates of infections and hospitalizations across the country have stabilized.
  • 32 million eligible Canadians have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

The Government of Canada has stated that it will continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments as necessary to keep citizens and the transportation system safe.

What’s Next

With vaccination requirements subsiding, it will be up to individuals to decide whether to take any additional precautions when travelling. As a reminder, mask-wearing will continue to be required on federally regulated transportation.
