Manufacturing Risk Advisor: How to Keep Your Employees Safe and Worksite Clean

Due to the nature of the materials they produce, most manufacturing organizations have remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic. This means that not only are on-site employees at a higher risk of becoming infected, but they are also at risk of contributing to the spread of the disease.

Follow these steps to keep your organization safe and clean during the pandemic:

  • Where possible, stagger employees’ shift hours and break periods to reduce the number of individuals working in proximity to each other. Additionally, make sure employees are kept isolated to their teams or work areas.
  • Encourage individuals to maintain a distance of at least two metres between each other at all times when possible.
  • Require individuals who work in close quarters with each other to wear personal protective equipment and observe all available practices to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
  • Make sure that the sharing of tools is kept to a minimum and that tools are always disinfected before being shared.
  • Stay abreast of the latest COVID-19 developments and communicate relevant updates to staff.
  • Enforce more strict cleaning and disinfecting procedures that follow a daily and weekly schedule.
  • Train staff on proper handwashing, cleaning and disinfecting procedures, as well as coughing and sneezing etiquette.
  • Encourage employees who experience symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever, coughing or congestion to stay home from work and notify their supervisor immediately.

Proper Handwashing Steps

COVID-19 and other harmful germs are easily broken down by following these six steps for proper handwashing:

  1. Wet hands.
  2. Apply soap.
  3. Scrub front and back of both hands, including between fingers and under nails for no fewer than 20 seconds.
  4. Rinse hands well.
  5. Dry hands well using a paper towel.
  6. Use the same paper towel to turn off the tap if necessary.
