Commercial Building Spring Maintenance Tips

Commercial Building Spring Maintenance Tips

Dirty and unsafe commercial premises can be hazardous to health and bad for business. Dirty surfaces are a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses that could cause illness among staff and customers, and cluttered workspaces can result in employee injuries. More than 42,000 workers get injured annually due to slip, trip and fall incidents, according to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. As such, it’s critical to maintain your commercial premises adequately. Consider the following spring maintenance tips:

  • Conduct housekeeping. A clean and tidy workplace helps minimize distractions so employees can focus on the job at hand. Declutter your premises and conduct a deep clean to bolster workforce productivity.
  • Test heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment. To ensure HVAC systems remain in optimal working condition, they should be regularly serviced. Specifically, change filters, clear debris from vents, and remove any built-up dirt and grime. Test the HVAC unit’s air flow, thermostat and general operating efficiency. Not only will adequate maintenance help ensure comfortable working conditions, but it may also minimize equipment breakdowns and lower energy bills.
  • Check for leaks. Since springtime can be rainy in Canada, it’s important to proactively check your commercial property for any leaks. Look for signs of dampness (e.g., mould, discoloured patches on walls or musty smells) and repair any problem areas. Inspect gutters and downspouts and remove any debris to enable adequate rainwater drainage.
  • Inspect and repair the business exterior. A well-maintained business exterior can prevent accidents and give customers a good first impression. Thoroughly clean the outside of your building and check for any cracks or signs of damage. Look for potholes in the parking lot, loose paving stones, cracked window glass or hazardous branches, and swiftly remedy any defects found.

By proactively cleaning and maintaining your commercial building this spring, you can facilitate smooth business operations, keep staff safe and avoid costly accidents.
