Take Precautions to Protect Employees From Heat Illness

Working outside in the summer can make employees vulnerable to heat-related illness. Hot weather, especially paired with physical labour, can cause body temperatures to rise to unsafe levels. Normally, the body cools itself through sweating, but this is not enough in hot and humid weather.
Specifically, extreme heat can result in serious illnesses, such as heat stroke, heat cramps or heat exhaustion.

Share the following tips with employees to help them stay protected against heat illness:

  • Consider clothing choices. Workers should opt for wearing loose, light-coloured clothing when possible. If a hard hat is not required, a different head covering could be worn to protect workers from the sun.
  • Take breaks. Employees should take short breaks to rest in the shade, and while they are resting, they should consider removing any outer protective gear they may be wearing.
  • Stay hydrated. Employees should drink water frequently, even if they don’t feel thirsty. In hot weather, they should be drinking at least 8 ounces every 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Build up to heavier work. Employees should not expect themselves to acclimate to the heat immediately. It can take up to two weeks to build up a tolerance to working in the summer heat.
  • Have a smart schedule. Recommend that workers avoid overexerting themselves during peak temperatures, which are usually during midday. The most physically demanding tasks should be reserved for early morning or late afternoon hours when the sun is less intense.
  • Know the warning signs. Everyone on-site should monitor themselves and each other for signs of heat illness. These symptoms include excessive sweating, cool or pale skin, nausea, headaches, weakness, vomiting, fast pulse, rapid breathing or confusion.
