Preventing Hearing Loss at Worksites

There are many potential risks on worksites due to the equipment and tools used. It’s essential to be aware of these dangers and do everything possible to protect workers and team members. One common risk on worksites is loud noises that could eventually lead to hearing loss. The best method to prevent noise-induced hearing loss is to eliminate the source or reduce noise at the source; however, these measures are not possible in certain situations.

When loud noises are impossible to avoid, choose one of the following hearing protectors:

• Earplugs—This type of protection is inserted in the ear canal. They may be pre-molded, moldable, rolldown foam, push-to-fit or custom molded. Earplugs can be mass-produced or individually molded to fit the ear. They can also be reusable or disposable Some of the advantages of earplugs are that they are inexpensive, small, easy to carry and comfortable for long-term wear in hot and humid work areas. On the other hand, they can irritate the ear canal, be easily misplaced and be difficult to insert and remove.
• Earmuffs—This type of protective equipment consists of sound-attenuating material, soft ear cushions that fit around the ear, and hard outer cups held together by a headband. Earmuffs are designed so that one size fits most employees’ heads. They are more difficult to misplace than earplugs and they are easy to take on and off. However, there are a few disadvantages to consider. Earmuffs are less portable and heavier, they can be uncomfortable in hot, humid work areas and may interfere with wearing prescription glasses or protective eyewear.

Deciding on a hearing protector depends on several factors, such as noise level, comfort, and the hearing protector’s suitability for the worker and the environment. Most importantly, the hearing protector should provide the appropriate noise reduction for the activity it’s being used for.
