The Importance of Safety Training in the Workplace

Safety training in the workplace is necessary in order to eliminate work-related illnesses and injuries. Common construction hazards can be contained or avoided when proper training is administered.

While keeping employees safe is the main goal for a safety training program, a safe workplace can also reduce overall construction costs. Proper safety training can keep insured losses, litigation fees, and administrative penalties and fines at bay.

Meeting and Maintaining Compliance

Safety training and continued safe practices are not only imperative to creating a safe working environment, but they are required under the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety Act. This act also established the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety in 1978, which has a goal of eliminating work-related illnesses and injuries across Canada.

Each province and territory also has its own occupational health and safety regulations that should be followed by employers and employees in the area. Understanding federal and provincial regulations is up to each employer.

Prioritizing Safety

Organizations can go about prioritizing safety by conducting a job safety analysis (JSA) to identify and correct potential dangers in the workplace. A JSA will allow employers to take appropriate measures to reduce or eliminate accidents, injuries and illnesses while on the job.
